Sahih: When Allah has decreed a rank for His servant..

Classification: Sahih. (Refer to Sahih Abu Dawud, 3090)

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "When Allah has previously decreed for a servant a rank which he has not attained by his action, He afflicts him in his body, or his wealth or his children, then He makes him patient upon that until He makes him reach the rank which has already been decreed for him by Allah."

Fabricated: Musa, the sinner of Bani Israel, and asking for rain.

Classification: Fabricated.

It was narrated that in the days that Musa alayhis salaam wandered with Bani Israeel in the desert, an intense drought befell them. Together, they raised their hands towards the heavens praying for the blessed rain to come. Then, to the astonishment of Musa alayhis salaam and all those watching, the few scattered clouds that were in the sky vanished, the heat poured down, and the drought intensified. It was revealed to Musa that there was a sinner amongst the tribe of Bani Israeel who had disobeyed Allah subhaanahu wa ta ‘aala for more than forty years of his life. “Let him separate himself from the congregation,” Allah subhaanahu wa ta ‘aala told Musa alayhis salaam. “Only then shall I shower you all with rain.” Musa alayhis salaam then called out to the throngs of humanity, “There is a person amongst us who has disobeyed Allah for forty years. Let him separate himself from the congregation and only then shall we be rescued from the drought.” That man waited, looking left and right, hoping that someone else would step forward, but no one did. Sweat poured forth from his brow and he knew that he was the one. The man knew that if he stayed amongst the congregation all would die of thirst and that if he stepped forward he would be humiliated for all eternity. He raised his hands with a sincerity he had never known before, with humility he had never tasted, and as tears poured down on both cheeks he said, “O Allah, have mercy on me! O Allah, hide my sins! O Allah, forgive me!” As Musa alayhis salaam and the people of Bani Israeel waited for the sinner to step forward, the clouds hugged the sky and the rain poured. Musa alayhi salaam asked Allah subhaanahu wa ta ‘aala, “O Allah, you blessed us with rain even though the sinner did not come forward.” And Allah subhaanahu wa ta ‘aala replied, “O Musa, it is for the repentance of that very person that I blessed all of Bani Israeel with water.” Musa alayhis salaam, wanting to know who this blessed man was, asked, “Show him to me O Allah!” Allah subhaanahu wa ta ‘aala replied, “O Musa, I hid his sins for forty years, do you think that after his repentance I shall expose him?”

Sahih: Worse than thirty-six acts of zina

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “A dirham which a man consumes from riba knowingly is worse before Allah than thirty-six acts of zina.”

Compilation: Light on the Day of Resurrection

Light on the Day of Resurrection:


{On that day you will see the believing men and the believing women-- their light running before them and on their right hand-- good news for you today: gardens beneath which rivers flow, to abide therein, that is the grand achievement} [57:12]


This is by no means a comprehensive list, but here are some of the authentic ahadith which mention deeds that will be a source of light, for the person who does them, on the Day of Resurrection.


1) Turning gray in Islam.

Prophet Muhammad peace and blessings of Allah be upon him said: “Do not pluck out gray hairs, for there is no Muslim whose hair turns gray in Islam, except that it will be light for him on the Day of Resurrection.” (Sahih Targheeb and Sahih Abu Dawud)


2) Walking to the masjid in the dark.

Prophet Muhammad peace and blessings of Allah be upon him said: “Give glad tidings to those who walk to the masajid in darkness, of complete light on the Day of Resurrection.” (Sahih Ibn Majah, Sahih Tirmidhi, and Sahih Abu Dawud)


3) Reciting Surah Al-Kahf.

Prophet Muhammad peace and blessings of Allah be upon him said: “Whoever recites Surah Al-Kahf in the same manner in which it was revealed, it will be light for him on the Day of Resurrection.” (Sahih Targheeb and Silsilah Sahiha)

*Note: It is sunnah to recite Surah Al-Kahf (# 18) on Fridays.


4) Shooting an arrow.

Prophet Muhammad peace and blessings of Allah be upon him said: “Whoever shot an arrow in the cause of Allah, it will be light for him on the Day of Resurrection.” (Sahih Targheeb)


5) Throwing the pebbles (Jamarat) during Hajj.

Prophet Muhammad peace and blessings of Allah be upon him said: “If you throw the pebbles, it will be light for you on the Day of Resurrection.” (Sahih Targheeb and Silsilah Sahiha)


6) Shaving your head during Hajj.

Prophet Muhammad peace and blessings of Allah be upon him said: “As for shaving your head, then there isn't but a single one of your hairs that falls on the ground, except that it will be light for you on the Day of Resurrection." (Sahih Targheeb)



Prophet Muhammad peace and blessings of Allah be upon him said: "Allah will gather mankind, the first and the last of them, on the Day whereon mankind will be gathered together, and they will be standing for forty years, their eyes fixedly staring in horror, waiting for the judgment. Then Allah, Glorified and Exalted, will say: 'Raise your heads.' So they raise their heads up, then He gives them their light according to their deeds, so some of them will get his light like a huge mountain running before him, and some of them will be given their light smaller than that..." (Sahih Targheeb)


So each will be given light according to their deeds.

{and to whomsoever Allah does not give light, then he has no light} [24:40]

Hasan: Whoever desires that Allah answers him during difficult times..

Classification: Hasan (authentic)

The Prophet (Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Whosoever desires that Allah answers him during times of difficulty and hardship, then let him supplicate a lot during times of ease."

Fabricated: Reward to the extent of our consciousness in prayer

Classification: Fabricated

(Refer to Silsilah Da'ifa; 6941)

"The Prophet informed us that we are only rewarded to the extent of our consciousness in prayer."


Please note that this is NOT a hadith of the Prophet peace be upon him and should not be attributed to him, but rather it is a statement of Sufyan Al-Thawri rahimahullah.

However, the following authentic hadith was narrated regarding perfecting our prayers such as having proper khushu' and concentration, as well as performing the actions of the prayer according to the sunnah, and that one's reward is in accordance to perfecting his prayer.

Ammar bin Yaasir radi Allahu anhu narrated that Prophet Muhammad sallahu alyihi wa sallam said, “One might finish the Salah, but only have a tenth, ninth, eighth, seventh, sixth, fifth, fourth, third, or half of it written for him” (Hasan, Sahih Abu Dawood; 796).

Fabricated: Glad tidings of the arrival of Safar..

Classification: Fabricated

“Whoever gives me the glad tidings of the arrival of (the month of) Safar, I give him the glad tidings of [entering] Jannah.”

Hasan: The Believer exhausts his devils ...

Classification: Hasan (authentic)

The Prophet (Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Verily the believer exhausts his devils just like one of you exhausts his camel during travel."

Sahih: The strong believer is better and more beloved to Allah than the weak believer, although both are good.

Classification: Sahih (authentic)

It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “The strong believer is better and more beloved to Allah than the weak believer, although both are good. Strive to do that which will benefit you and seek the help of Allah, and do not feel helpless. If anything befalls you, do not say ‘If only I had done (such and such), then such and such would have happened,’ rather say: ‘Allah has decreed and what He wills He does,’ for ‘if only’ opens the door to the work of the shaytaan.” Narrated by Muslim (2664).

Sahih: The True Dream is one of the forty-five parts of Prophet-hood.

It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Towards the end of time, hardly any dream of a Muslim will be false. The ones who have the truest dreams will be those who are truest in speech. The dream of a Muslim is one of the forty-five parts of Prophet-hood. Dreams are of three types: a good dream which is glad tidings from Allah, a dream from the Shaytan which causes distress, and a dream that comes from what a man is thinking of to himself.” [Muslim; 2263]

Sahih: If a fly falls into your drink, then immerse it completely..

Classification: Sahih (authentic)

Narrated Abu Hurairah Allah be pleased with him that the Prophet Muhamad (peace and blessings upon him) said: "If a housefly falls into the drink of anyone of you, he should immerse it completely in the liquid, then remove it, for one of its wings has the disease and the other has the cure." (Sahih Bukhari, 3320)

In another narration of this hadith related by Abu Dawood, it also mentions that the fly protects itself with the wing that has the disease under it.

This means that when the fly falls into a container of food or drink, it falls with its wing that has the disease into the food/drink first, while the other wing with the cure might remain outside the drink. Therefore, we should immerse the fly completely into the food or drink before removing it.

Sahih: Good deeds during first 10 days of Dhu’l-Hijjah.

Classification: Sahih (authentic)

It was narrated from Ibn ‘Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “There are no days on which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allah than these ten days.” They said: “Not even jihad for the sake of Allah?” He said: “Not even jihad for the sake of Allah, unless a man goes out himself for jihad taking his wealth with him and does not come back with anything.” Narrated by Al-Bukhari, 969.

Weak: Any matter of importance which is not begun with Alhamdulillah is defective.

Classification: Weak.

Sahih: Jewish boy who got sick accepted Islam.

From Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: “A Jewish boy used to serve the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and he fell sick. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) went and visited him. He sat by his head and said, ‘Enter Islam.’ The boy looked at his father, who was present. (His father) said, ‘Obey Abu’l-Qaasim (meaning the Prophet peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).’ So the boy entered Islam and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) left saying, ‘Praise be to Allah Who has saved him from the Fire.’”
Narrated by Al-Bukhaari (1356)

Sahih: He threw the rock at the man's head, smashing it...

Classification: Sahih (authentic)

It was narrated that Samurah ibn Jundub (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) often used to ask his companions, ‘Did any one of you see a dream?’ So dreams would be described to him by those who Allah willed should speak. One morning, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:

“Last night, two people came to me (in a dream), and woke me up and said, ‘Let’s go!’ I set out with them, and we came across a man who was lying down, with another man standing over him, holding a big rock. He threw the rock at the man's head, smashing it. The rock rolled away, and the one who had thrown it followed it, and picked it up. By the time he came back to the man, his head had been restored to its former state. Then he (the one who had thrown the rock) did the same as he had done before. I said to my two companions, ‘Subhan Allah! Who are these two persons?’ They said, ‘Move on!’ So we went on, and came to a man who was lying flat on his back, with another man standing over him, holding an iron hook. He put the hook in the man's mouth and tore off that side of his face to the back (of his neck), and he tore his nose and his eye from front to back in a similar manner. Then he turned to the other side of the man's face and did likewise. No sooner had he finished the second side but the first side was restored to its former state, then he went back and did the same thing again. I said to my two companions, ‘Subhan Allah! Who are these two persons?’ They said, ‘Move on!’ So we went on, and came to something like a tannoor (a kind of oven, lined with clay, usually used for baking bread). I think the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, in that oven there was much noise and voices. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) added: We looked into it and saw naked men and women. A flame of fire was reaching them from underneath, and when it reached them, they cried out loudly. I asked them, ‘Who are these?’ They said to me, ‘Move on!’ So we went on and came to a river – I think he said, red like blood. – In the river there was a man swimming, and on the bank there was a man who had gathered many stones. Whilst the swimmer was swimming, the man who had gathered the stones approached him. The swimmer opened his mouth and the man on the bank threw a stone into it, then the swimmer carried on swimming. Each time he came back, he opened his mouth again, and the man on the bank threw another stone into his mouth. I said to my two companions, ‘Who are these two persons?’ They said, ‘Move on, move on!’ We went on and came to a man who had the most repulsive appearance imaginable. Beside him there was a fire, which he was kindling, and he was running around it. I asked my companions, ‘Who is this man?’ They said, ‘Move on, move on!’ So we went on until we reached a garden of deep green dense vegetation, with all kinds of spring colours. In the midst of this garden was a very tall man, whose head I could hardly see because of his great height. Around him there were children, a great number such as I have never seen. I said to my companions, ‘who is this man, and who are these children?’ They said, ‘Move on, move on!’ So we went on, until we came to a huge garden, bigger and better than any I have ever seen. My two companions said to me, ‘Go up.’ So we went up into it, until we reached a city built of gold and silver bricks. We went to the gate and asked for it to be opened. It was opened and we entered the city, where we found men with one side of their bodies more handsome than the most handsome person you have ever seen, and the other side uglier than the ugliest person you have ever seen. My two companions ordered those men to throw themselves into the river. There was a river flowing through the city, and its water was pure white. The men went and threw themselves in the river, and came out with the ugliness in their bodies gone, and they were in the best shape. (My two companions) said to me, ‘This is the Paradise of ‘Aden (the Garden of Eden), and that is your place.’ I looked up and saw a palace like a white cloud. They said to me, ‘That is your place.’ I said to them, ‘May Allah bless you both, let me enter it.’ They said, ‘For now you will not enter it, but you shall enter it (one day).’ I said to them, I have seen many wonders this night. What do all these things mean that I have seen?’ They said: ‘We will tell you. The first man you came across, whose head was being smashed with the rock, is the man who studies the Qur’an then he neither recites it nor acts upon it, and he goes to sleep, neglecting the obligatory prayers. The man you came across whose mouth, nose and ears were being torn from front to back, is the man who goes out of his house in the morning and tells a lie that is so serious that it spreads all over the world. The naked men and women whom you saw in a structure that resembled an oven are the adulterers and adulteresses. The man you saw swimming in the river with rocks being thrown into his mouth is the one who consumed riba (usury). The ugly-looking man whom you saw kindling a fire and walking around it was Malik, the keeper of Hell. The tall man whom you saw in the garden was Ibrahim, and the children around him were the children who died (young) in a state of fitrah (natural state of mankind, i.e., Islam).’ – Some of the Muslims asked, ‘O Messenger of Allah, what about the children of the mushrikeen?’ He said, ‘And the children of the mushrikeen too.’ – ‘As for the men who were half handsome and half ugly, they were people who had mixed a good deed with another deed that was bad, but Allah forgave them.’” (narrated by Al-Bukhari, no. 6525)

Fabricated: Give your brother 70 excuses.

Classification: Fabricated.

Note: Although this is not a hadith of the Prophet (peace & blessings upon him), however, similar statements have been related from the sayings of some of the early scholars of Islam. In addition, there are many ahadith which state that we should cover the faults of our fellow Muslims and not be suspicious of them.

Fabricated: Allah does not look at the crooked line.

Classification: Fabricated.

The hadith which states that Allah does not look at the crooked line (meaning the line of people in prayer).

Narrated by al-Bukhaari (690) and Muslim (433) from Anas, that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Make your rows straight, for straightening the rows is part of the perfection of prayer.” According to the version narrated by al-Bukhaari: “… is part of the establishing of prayer.”

Ahmad (12374), Abu Dawood (671) and al-Nasaa’i (818) narrated from Anas that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Complete the first row, then the next one, and if there is to be any incomplete row let it be the last row.” Classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh Abi Dawood.

Ahmad (5724) and Abu Dawood (666) narrated from ‘Abd-Allaah ibn ‘Umar that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Straighten the rows, for you form rows like the angels, and keep your shoulders in line with one another, and fill the gaps, and do not leave any room for the Shaytaan. Whoever joins a row to complete it, Allaah will take care of him and whoever interrupts a row, Allaah will cut him off.” This hadeeth was classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh Abi Dawood.

It was narrated from ‘Abd-Allaah ibn ‘Umar that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Make your rows straight, stand shoulder to shoulder and close the gaps, and do not resist your brothers’ hands. Do not leave any gaps for the Shaytaan. Whoever complete a row, Allaah will reward him, and whoever breaksa row, Allaah will forsake him.

Abu Dawood said: What is meant by “Do not resist your brothers’ hands” is that a man should be easy-going if his brother pushes him forwards or backwards to make the row straight. (‘Awn al-Ma’bood).

Narrated by Abu Dawood, 666; al-Nasaa’i, 819. Classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh Abi Dawood, 620.

It was narrated that al-Nu’maan ibn Basheer said:

“The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) turned to face the people and said, ‘Straighten your rows,’ three times, ‘for by Allaah either you straighten your rows or Allaah will create division among your hearts.’ And I saw men standing shoulder to shoulder, knee to knee, ankle to ankle.”

Narrated by Abu Dawood, 662; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh Abi Dawood, 616.


Al-Bukhaari, may Allaah have mercy on him, narrated (683) from Anas that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Make your rows straight, for I can see you from behind my back.”

Anas said: “so each of us would stand with his shoulder against his neighbour’s shoulder and his foot against his foot.”

Al-Bukhaari (may Allaah have mercy on him) gave this chapter the title: “Chapter on standing shoulder to shoulder and foot to foot.”

He said: al-Nu’maan ibn Basheer said: “I saw people standing with their ankles against their neighbours’ ankle.”

Fabricated: Umar bin al-Khattab burried his daughter alive.

Classification: Fabricated.

On one occasion, a few companions saw Umar ibn al-Khattab (Allah be pleased with him) laughing and then crying; one after the other. They asked what reason made him laugh then cry. He said, "I remember that in the days of Jahiliyyah, I used to have this idol made of dates. One day, I became so hungry that I ate it. And then, I cried when I remembered digging a hole and burying my daughter alive. While I was putting her in, she reached up and brushed dirt from my beard.”

Fabricated: Hassan & Hussein teach an old man how to do wudu'.

Classification: Fabricated.

One day an old pious Bedouin came to Medina. At the time of Prayers he began to make wudu’ but he was making his wudu' (ablution) incorrectly. Hassan and Hussain (Allah be pleased with them both) saw the old man making wudu’ wrong and they wanted to correct him. They didn’t want to offend him or make him feel insulted, so they came up with a plan. They went to the old man and said, "My brother and I disagree over who amongst us performs wudu’ the best. Would you mind watching us make wudu’ and be the judge to see which one of us indeed performs wudu' more correctly? Could you please correct us wherever we are wrong?" The man watched carefully trying to judge who is better. In the end he understood what was going on and said "By Allah, I did not know how to perform wudu’ before this. You have both taught me how to do it correctly."
